How to Trim Dog Nails

Learning how to clip dog nails and avoiding dog nail bleeding is very important. A good indicator to tell if your dog's nails are too long is if you hear a tapping noise when your yorki poo, other designer pup is walking across the floor. Small dog nail clipping and trimming can be done with help or on your own. If you are a beginner, it is a good idea to grab a partner to help in cutting dog claws for the first time. Cutting dogs nails and claws can be quite easy with practice!

Steps To Dog Nail Trimming

1. Set your new yorkie or designer breed puppy securely on a stable table. You can use a dog grooming table if you like but this is unnecessary. Some people feel more comfortable holding their yorkie in their laps. Either way is good for cutting dog claws.

2. Hold the paw firmly and push on his pads to extend the dog's nail. You will now need to locate and avoid the kwik.

3. At a 45 degree angle, cut the nail below the kwik, with a specialized dog nail trimmer by inserting the dog's nail in the hole of the dog trimmer and squeezing the handles to cut the dog dog's nail. This must be done in a smooth and quick manner.

   With dark nails, as some of your yorkies and yorkiepoos may have, you may want to start at the end of the nail and make a series of small clips.

How to stop dog nail bleeding on the dog's or puppy's quick

Should you cut the nail too far up your designer breed dog's nail, you can stop the dog nail bleeding a number of ways. However we have a dog's homemade remedy using cornstarch to stop the bleeding below.

1. If you have a yelp on your dog's quick, you have probably cut to far up the nail.

2. Wrap a napkin on the dog's nail

3. In a small bowl, pour in flour or cornstarch

4. Remove the napkin from your dog's nail and put in the bowl for about 30-45 seconds and nail bleeding should stop.

Dog Paw Grooming

Grooming paws of your yorkiepoo, yorkie or designer breed dog is something that often overlooked but also very important to pay attention to. Poodle mixed puppies and other non shedding dogs that are hypoallergenic are wonderful for people wanting to avoid ball of fur around their home or who are allergic to dogs, however they do require a bit more dog grooming then other breeds. 3. Wash your dog's paw with a mild shampoo and condition

Training a Yorkie

Even though the Yorkie breed is very loyal, they can be trouble when it comes to training as they are stubborn little dogs. Some Yorkie training tips I give my new Yorkie puppy owners are as follows:

Yorkie Potty Training problems

Yorkie puppies are easiest to potty train. When you receive your Yorkie puppy, cart train in a very small crate as soon as possible. When you take your puppy out to feed, or play, always put the puppy in a small enclosed area to run around. Put a puppy pad in the area and your puppy should go and relieve himself on it automatically. A puppy will need to use the bathroom frequently so multiple trips outside the crate will be needed. About 4-5 trips total per day.

Once the puppy has all of his shots which is around the 3rd month of life, it is time to start outside potty training. You will follow the same step as above but instead of putting the puppy in an enclosed area, you will be taking the puppy outside on a leash. This time each time a puppy uses "it" make sure to give treats. You will need to stay outside long enough for the puppy to use number 1 AND number 2. Patience and repetition is key on this!
